Realist painter specialised in oil portraiture. I work almost exclusively on commissions and I like to work with themes that relate to the colourful Scottish culture and traditions. I have painted lairds, clan chiefs and included different tartans in my work.
My preference is to paint from life with a sight-size approach, which means that I paint what I see the same size I see it from a fixed point, but I can use photographs if that is easier for my clients. I generally travel to my client’s preferred locations for the sittings and I complete the rest of the painting, such as the background and details, in my small studio in Fife.
I like to include allegoric elements which describe or relate to the sitter’s personality and background. For me, every painting tells a life story. Instead of capturing a moment, my portraits create that moment, becoming a visual analogy of an person’s life.
